Poster Artist Story
Wild Manywounds
March 2022
This piece represents what my grandparents and other residential school survivors went through. They taught me that our hair is our strength, and they shared their stories of the hardships they faced while attending residential and day schools.
The child in the middle holds his hair, symbolizing what was taken from children on their first day of school. The tipi represents the home they were torn away from. The sun and moon reflect the days and nights they spent in the schools. The broken arrow signifies the peace that was broken between Canada and Indigenous people. Surrounding the circle, the men represent the children’s families, waiting for their return.
The rawhide and string are moose hide, tied to hand-picked and carved saskatoon sticks. Four eagle feathers stand at the top, with horsehair tied on both sides.
